Photomatix - HDR images
Click thumbnail to view full-sizePhotomatix
Photomatix allows you to take 3(or more) differently exposed photos (referred to as bracketing) and merge them together into one image resulting in lightened shadows and deeper dramatic highlights. This post processing method is called HDR (High Dynamic Range) HDR gives the photo more detail and definition. But it doesn't stop there, after merging your photos together these deep highlights and brightened shadows exceed the viewing capabilities of a standard monitor, so the image must then be “mapped” . This process is called Tone Mapping. Photomatix takes the tonal values and makes it compatible with a standard monitor, basically allowing a 8 bit monitor to view a 32-bit HDR image. I wont get too deep into that..... Just know that
With this HDR program, you can take any old photo and make it pop. It allows you to basically make something out of nothing. Providing interesting detail with a more dynamic range of colors to your images!
As of right now, the latest version 3.2 (4.0 is in beta) provides many more options as far as detail enhancement and tone compression then the earlier versions. My favorites are the ability to apply different types of preset options to your photos. Its fun to play around with and see what all you can come up with!
Photomatix pro trial version is available at the website. After the trial version has expired, you may still use the program but a watermark is then applied to the image until a license for this photo editing program is purchased. If you already have an older version of Photomatix, the upgrade from version 2.x to version 3.2 if available free of charge on their website.
Photoshop also allows you to create HDR images, but I will go into detail on that at another time. Until then go to www.hdrsoft.com and download your trial version of photomatix, check out what it has to offer. You wont be disappointed!
